About Me

megThe Back Story
Determined to break free of my ho-hum suburban life, I issued myself a challenge in 2011: try 40 new things by my 30
th birthday in January 2012. This equated to roughly one new adventure each week. My follies are chronicled on this site (entries 1 – 40). Overall, the experience was awesome but it wasn’t all hearts and flowers. Sometimes I had fun, other times I got frustrated or annoyed. Sometimes I succeeded, and other times I failed miserably. Above all, I learned from each experience and slowly grew into a more adventurous person.

It was a relief to complete my initial goal. Trying something new, writing, then uploading photos and posting each week can be taxing. But, after I completed my quest, I frequently found myself saying, “That would be a fun blog idea,” only to abandon the activity altogether when I remembered the blog was dormant. I missed being accountable. The blog gave me the nudge I needed to engage. Eventually I retreated to resisting change and avoiding new things. I was giving up on all the lessons fortybythirty taught me. That’s why I’m back. I began phase two of fortybythirty in May 2013. I’m now working towards 100 new adventures.

About me
I live in the Twin Cities metro with my awesome husband Brad and our ridiculous dog. I’m a pretty standard Minnesotan: I know how to ice skate, I complain about mosquitos and I routinely get dental fillings with no Novocain just to prove I can.

I like pancakes, crab cakes and birthday cake, but not CAKE.

I try to find fun in everything I do. I admit, I don’t always suceed; there really ins’t anything fun about cleaning toilets, but I try.

About Chili Dog chili
Chili the black lab has an extraordinary number of fans. You’ll notice he pops up on the blog routinely. He is my partner in crime. A 90-pound clown who isn’t afraid to steal the limelight, Chili is basically the dog version of me (minus 40 pounds).  His idea of a perfect day includes swimming, hiking off leash and “cuddling.” His version of cuddling entails wielding his crushing wall of fur and slobber into any place that is located remotely near a human. He also howls in his sleep, which is adorable.

About my writing style
I’m a story teller. That’s why you’ll see long entries with detailed descriptions. I don’t adhere to  traditional blog advice to keep things short and photo heavy. I get that this isn’t a web-friendly way to present my content, but my objective is not to get the most readers possible, it is to write in an entertaining and robust way that keeps readers entertained and engaged.

Why don’t you change the name of your blog?
Yes, I know that fortybythrity is an outdated title since I’ve completed more than 40 entries and I’ve surpassed my 30
th birthday. I just can’t bring myself to change my domain. They didn’t change the name of 1984 when it was 1985! I like living here, and I’m not moving out.
